Commander Codex
Commander Codex is a character guessing game for Magic: The Gathering Commander players, where you must correctly identify a secret general by deducing from attribute data after each guess. Instead of guessing words, like in Wordle-like games, this game challenges your knowledge of cards, stats, and release history.
How to play Commander Codex
Each time you guess a valid commander (from a list of 500 popular commanders on EDHREC), the hint panel will display several parameters to compare with the actual answer:
- Green → perfect match
- Yellow → partial similarity
- Arrow → actual stats are higher or lower
- Gray → irrelevant
Attributes compared include:
- Color Identity
- Mana Value (CMC)
- Year of release
- Total Power + Toughness
- Race/subtype
Tips and Tricks
- In the Magic: The Gathering system, color is the strongest exclusion attribute. One correct or nearly correct guess of color identity can eliminate hundreds of commanders instantly.
- Prioritize commanders with lots of information for the first round. Choose a commander with multiple colors, average CMC (4–5), and a common subtype (Human, Elf…), and you'll get the most data to deduce.
- The list of commanders is taken from EDHREC's top 500, so commanders with few players are excluded. Prioritize guessing popular commanders first.
If word guessing games test vocabulary, then Commander Codex tests memory and understanding of the entire commander ecosystem—a kind of Wordle for Magic players but with much more strategic depth. If you want to switch to the French version of Wordle, we have Devimot.
