Wikitrivia
Wikitrivia is a timeline-matching game based on Wikipedia and Wikidata. Players must correctly place historical events on an expanding timeline. This is the core mechanic of the game, which is both simple and addictive.
How to play Wikitrivia
When the game starts, you will see two events. One event is on the top and one event is shown on a line, representing the timeline below.
Determine whether the top event occurs before or after the event on the timeline and drag it into the correct position.
Then, the next event will appear, and the player must continue to arrange that event on the timeline below.
You can only get it wrong up to 3 times. If you get it wrong more than 3 times, the game will end.
Tips and Tricks
Grouping Events by Time
Break the timeline in your head into broad categories such as:
- Ancient (before year 0)
- Medieval (around 500–1500)
- Modern (1500–1900)
- Modern (after 1900)
For example, “Kingdom of Strathclyde” is a medieval kingdom, so it should definitely be placed before modern events like “Vaporwave” (2010) or the band Ateez (2018).
Based on background knowledge
If you know that Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a 19th-century poet, you can place her before the age of cinema.
Recent celebrities like Jesse Eisenberg or K-Pop groups definitely appear after classical works like “Tosca” (Puccini’s 19th-century opera).
Modern cultural events are usually at the end
Concepts like “Vaporwave” (a genre of internet music) or Korean groups like Ateez are almost always from the year 2000 onwards.
Read the small description below each tag carefully
For example,
“Tosca” is clearly a three-act opera composed by Puccini, so you can quickly look up his timeline (late 19th century).
“Maccabees” is a group of ancient Jewish warriors, which implies that the event happened very early – even before Christ.
Wikitrivia is not just a game, but also a journey through the timeline of humanity. Check out the game GeoQuest if you want to embark on a geographical journey.
